Each sphere is a 13-face polyhedron with a reflective marker on every face, so the scanner sees several markers at once from almost any direction. Place them around a part instead of sticking dots on it, which is useful for parts that cannot take adhesive or must be scanned from all sides.
The cylindrical base raises the sphere off the surface for better visibility; the flat base sits lower and more stable. Both bases are magnetic and also stand freely on a table or turntable.
